Higher Ed has the corner on the market for adult education and rarely do they willingly cooperate. What if there was a way ISDs could be included in the same revenue streams, political discussions, and training options as higher education, for a third of the cost? The MOISD thinks there is a way... Meceola Tech! The MOISD believes ISDs can train adults through certificate-based education to adults, without the humanities class and intramural fees. The political climate couldn’t be better for this idea and legislators are lining up to help! This session will look at possible paths to this destination.

Arts and Communication: Front Street Writers & Film and New Media at the TBAISD Career-Tech Center

03:30 PM 04:30 PM Indigo 2

Come hear about Front Street Writers, a new CTE program at the TBAISD Career-Tech Center. It's the first and only program of its kind in the state and was formed through a unique partnership between the National Writers Series and the TBAISD. Writers-in-residence, best-selling authors, and other industry professionals conduct master classes and workshops with students as a core component of instruction to support students in developing their writing from both an artistic and a practical perspective. Taught by a teacher and a writer-in-residence, the class includes student portfolios, public readings, publication, co-op and work experiences, and collaborative productions with students from our Graphic Arts and Film and New Media programs.

Lenawee Aligned CTE & Reverse Job Fair

12:30 PM 01:30 PM Indigo 1

Lenawee ISD has established a strong CTE program including an amazing collaborative effort with Lenawee Now/Lenawee Economic Development Corp. that truly partners CTE education and employers, with a strong focus on manufacturing. One of their highlighted events is a Reverse Job Fair that has led to immediate employment for some High School students along with a stronger partnership with local employers. Though it started with Manufacturing careers, it has grown into the Automotive technologies and other Skilled Trades. This collaborative partnership has been garnering statewide attention, including a published Toolkit.

12:30 PM 01:30 PM Indigo 2

An unknown author once said, “Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime.” Join us for a look at how Oakland Schools developed meaningful collaboration with members from government, industry and community partnerships; creating the pathways to apprenticeship system to reach the goal of every student discovering their pathway through valuable industry partnerships. Student success for a lifetime is a goal education aspires to reach and graduating students that are well prepared for the future workforce is the ultimate outcome for our industry partners.

GED and Trades Certification a Recipe for Success

01:45 PM 02:45 PM Indigo 1

At the Tuscola Technology Center in Caro Mi, we have developed and implemented a daytime GED/Skilled Trades program that gives high school students that are off track to graduate a chance to get their GED and a skill trade certification like AWS American Welding Society or ASE Automotive Service Excellence and many more. Students spend half of their day studying for a GED and the second half in a trades program of interest. When they receive their GED they still remain in the trades class to continue and complete the course training. We are very proud of the success percentage and would like to share how this has helped students in Tuscola county have a future.

A Successful Journey Above the Bridge with Pre-Employment Transition Services in Action

01:45 PM 02:45 PM Indigo 2

Eastern Upper Peninsula Intermediate School District (EUPISD) and Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) Inter-Agency Cash Transfer Agreement was utilized in providing pre-employment transition services. In order to achieve student outcomes, post secondary students participate in paid work-based learning experiences (these businesses were committed to improving post-secondary outcomes for our students with disabilities), utilize programs such as Conover, Skills to Pay the Bills, and CareerScope along with educator lead work readiness skills workshops. A pilot project was created where students completed the work readiness programs followed by paid work-based learning experiences with community agencies and businesses throughout the community.
